Consumer products may comprise one or more agents that can provide a desired benefit to such product and/or a situs that is contacted with such a product . Unfortunately, in some cases such as, for example, fluid products, benefit agents may be degraded by or degrade components of such products before their use.  Thus, a system that protects the components of a product and provides the desired level of benefit agent at the desired time is the object of many research efforts. This patent is related to processes and materials that can be used to produce encapsulated benefit agents that do not damage such products during product storage, yet do not alter the desired release profile.

This patent is the result of a collaboration of Meteor with P&G Eurocor S.A.

Intervenció de Ricard Garcia-Valls a Tarragona radio, el 12/12/2014 per informar sobre el "Tarragona International Forward Osmosis Workshop" del 18/12/2014 :

Noticia publicada a la web de Tarragona Radio :

Tarragona debat aquest divendres sobre les novetats al voltant de l’osmosi directa portant dos dels experts de referència mundial. Serà en el marc del Tarragona International Forward Osmosis Workshop. Té lloc a partir de les 9,30 h. a la sala de conferències del Centre Tecnològic de la Química, al campus Sescelades.

Igual que l'osmosi inversa, la directa utilitza una membrana semipermeable per separar l'aigua de soluts dissolts. La membrana actua com una barrera que permet a petites molècules com l'aigua passin a través seu, mentre que es bloqueja les molècules més grans com les sals, els sucres, midons, proteïnes, virus, bacteris i paràsits.

Un dels experts que intervindrà serà el professor i investigador de la URV, Ricard Garcia-Valls, que és el responsable d’aquest grup de recerca al Centre Tecnològic de la Química. Ha explicat a Tarragona Ràdio que l’osmosi directa té aplicacions en múltiples camps com el farmacèutic, el de l’energia o l’automoció.

En primer lloc intervindrà Fernando Torres, director general del Centre Tecnològic de la Química. Durant la jornada s’escoltarà el Dr.Gluck, que es referirà a l'aproximació industrial a l'osmosi directa, i el Dr. McCutcheon sobre l'enfocament acadèmic i en la investigació.

09/2013 microcapsules of vanillin to fight bacteria

A group of URV researchers led by Doctor Ricard Garcia-Valls has taken advantage of the antibacterial properties of vanillin to develop microcapsules that can be incorporated into fabrics and thus create antibacterial curtains. The work has been carried out by the research group at the METEOR-Centre for Membrane Technology and Engineering Processes of the URV in collaboration with Doctor Magdalena Constantí of the Nanobiotechnology and Bioanalysis Group.

 

.This new study has opened up the possibility of developing curtains with an antibacterial layer that resists odours and gives off a scent of vanilla. The technology has been developed at the URV and opens the door to new medical applications in preventing the spread of hospital infections through bed linen and other objects. The results of the research have been published in an article in the scientific journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research of the American Chemical Society.

The article points out that vanillin (the principal ingredient in the vanilla extract that can be found in any supermarket) offers more than just a pleasant smell because it can also combat microbes including Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium responsible for many of the infections contracted in hospitals. The research team decided to use microcapsule technology as a means of incorporating both the fresh aroma and the antibacterial properties of vanilla into curtains.

This has resulted in the microencapsulation of vanilla in small capsules made of polysulfone, a heat resistant plastic. These capsules were then embedded in layers of cotton. The study shows that curtains containing these microcapsules resist the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and that the coating remains intact after several dry-cleaning cycles. The scientists believe that this research has opened the way for the development of further antibacterial and pleasant smelling fabrics.

Invitation to R. Garcia Valls at Suschem action Educate to Innovate at Leverkusen

Suschem celebrates meetings with selected academics to design action to Educate to Innovate, this one was help at the INVITE Center at Leverkusen and was to design actions to develop education materials for students in chemistry and chemical engineering with the last updates in new modular chemical plants design developed at F3 European Project.

A total of 17 European selected academics were invited, among them METEOR member Ricard Garcia Valls was there to help in this action.

Our PhD student Asta Šakalyte has just started a 3-months research stay at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Polymerforschung, Mainz, Germany, in the lab of Prof. Hans Wolfgang Spiess. She is going to investigate on the orientation and transport of our novel biomimetic membranes by Solid State NMR.

It deals with preparation of silica membrane material by sol-gel method.The novel material is named Hydrophobic Metal-doped silica. This is a way to tailor the pore size and surface of silica membrane material by adding organic templating agent and doping metal during sol-gel process.
Several characterization techniques, such as contact angle, FTIR, TGA and micropore structure were used to characterize the novel material."

Seminar (June 15, 2012) : Novel nanomaterials for environmental applications and nanomedicine (Joaquín Silvestre-Albero)

Abstract:

The great progress achieved in the last few years in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology has been inevitable linked to the design of new nanomaterials able to perform optimum in a given application. In this sense, materials science has been crucial in hot topics such as environmental science and nanomedicine.
One of the main problems of our society in the field of environmental science concerns the large dependence on fossil fuels and, consequently, the emission of large quantities of greenhouse gases, mainly CO2, to the atmosphere. Taking into account that CO2 is a powerful greenhouse gas associated with the climate change, the remediation of CO2emissions is a challenging task. Among the different technologies for CO2 abatement, adsorption using porous solids is a promising alternative to the actual technology based on absorption processes using basic solvents (e.g. amines). In any case, an optimum sorbent for CO2 capture must combine a large adsorption capacity, an easy regeneration and, more importantly, it must be able to selectively adsorb CO2 and discriminate molecules of similar molecular dimensions such as CH4 or N2, typically present in industrial streams. In this sense, the appropriate selection of the porous material (e.g. activated carbon), the carbon precursor used (e.g. petroleum pitch) and the preparation conditions (e.g. chemical activation using KOH) allows the design of activated carbon materials able to fulfill all these requirements. A subsequent goal in the selective capture of CO2 concern the development of new nanomaterials able to convert the entrapped CO2 into valuable products, such as CH4, CH3OH, and so on. In this sense, the design and development of proper Ti-based photocatalysts with the appropriate porous structure and active centers (Ti4+ active sites) could be used to perform the well-known artificial photosynthesis, i.e. the conversion of CO2into solar fuels.
Another research area where material science is becoming crucial concerns the field of nanomedicine. >In this sense, in the last few years there has been a growing research focusing in the development of biocompatible nanomaterials for biological applications (e.g. drug delivery). One of the main areas where drug delivery is becoming a cutting edge concern cancer therapy. Actual chemotherapies are based on the incorporation of the drug (platinum precursor; e.g. cis-platinum) in human blood, this process exhibiting large secondary effects (e.g. hair loss). New technologies are focusing in the incorporation of the pharmaceutical compound (cis-platinum) into an inorganic reservoir or carrier able to selectively recognize the damaged cells, avoiding secondary effects in the organism. In this sense, materials science is playing a crucial role in the development of these biocompatible carriers based on high-surface area titanias or silicas, where the active compound is supported on the carrier´s surface.

The consortium of the research European project CAP-IT! (“Advanced encapsulation technology for detergency sustainable”), of 7º PM Marie Curie - IAPP meets June 13th, 14th and 15th in the Chemical Department of Engineering on the Sescelades campus in Tarragone.

The project is within the framework of the applied research in the field of microencapsulation, to create new industrial products for a amount of 1.5 million EURO for four years.

The person in charge is professor Ricard Garcia Valls, with the support of Laureano Jiménez.

Program INNPRONTA, managed by the Center for the Industrial Technological development (CDTI), assigned with the Ministry for Science and the Innovation, chose its first seven integrated industrial research great projects. The objective of Program INNPRONTA consists in financing range scientist-technique and dimension, industrial research great projects to strategic nature and technology sector with a future economic and commercial and internationallevel.

One of the projects chosen by the CDTI, was Consortium ITACA, led by ADASA and made by a total 10 companies and of 11 Public agencies of Research (OPI). Dow Chemical Ibérica S.L takes share with 11.5% of the total budget of this Project, in collaboration with the Tecnologique Center of the Chemistry of Catalonia (CTQC) like assigned OPI with Dow.
